Meet Devereux School

Meet Devereux School

Tell us about Devereux School. Devereux School is a Montessori inspired school founded in Marblehead in 1932. We accommodate preschool students from 3 years old all the way up to the 3rd grade. Our nearly one hundred Devereux students are currently taught in 5 classrooms/buildings. In addition to traditional school subjects, Devereux inspires a love of nature with daily walks in the woods and yoga, as well as piano, art and chorus. All students receive daily French lessons from our French language Directors. The Devereux School was purchased in 2010 by Dr. Todd Zion, all whose three children attended the school. Todd’s ownership coincided with substantial investment in both infrastructure and faculty. Although the school has grown in both size and enrollment under Todd’s leadership, we’ve been cognizant of the importance of carefully balancing the traditions and history of the past with the needs of our twenty-first century families.

We’re also pleased to offer a fourth/fifth grade class, Devereux@Waring. The D@W classroom accommodates sixteen students and is located on the Waring School campus in Beverly. Our fourth/fifth grade program was founded in 2016. The program has grown year over year, and we currently have two full time teachers and sixteen students. D@W attracts students from all over the north shore and students get to experience not only the wonderful scenery of the Waring campus but also enjoy all the fantastic Waring facilities such as the gym, theater, art studios and greenhouse.

Our students also benefit from participation in the weekly Waring all-school meetings as well as additional tutoring from Waring seniors. Whilst many of our graduating fifth graders move on to sixth grade at Waring, others return to their local school districts or other area private schools. No matter their destination, our students are well prepared for the next stages of their education.

What sets the Devereux School apart from other schools? Our student-teacher ratios are unparalleled across all grades. We have five native French speaking teachers, and our students begin to learn French at three years old. We provide at least one full day of French immersion to all nursery students, with our older nursery students receiving two days. Also, we encourage community service, even amongst our youngest students. The Merry Mixers, My Brothers Table, Spur, LifeBridge and Newhall Fields Community Farm are just a few of the organizations that benefit from our group efforts. Additionally, our school day ends at 4pm and we offer daily after school care to all age groups. Lastly, our tuition rates are the lowest of any private school on the North Shore.

What type of Camp Programs do you provide? We offer seven weeks of summer camp. Families can sign up for individual weeks or all seven weeks. For new incoming school students, a couple of weeks at Camp Devereux is a great way for them to become accustomed to their new surroundings. Since 1932, Devereux School has offered Camp Devereux to both our own students and the public. It’s a wonderful summertime environment ideal for traditional summer activities such as designing a sandcastle, relaxing on a blanket, making bead jewelry, or organizing a basketball or soccer game with old and new friends. Campers can help in the vegetable garden or observe butterflies in our newly planted butterfly patch. Campers enjoy the use of our newly refurbished and heated pool and receive daily swim instruction under the guidance of our Aquatic Director and two certified lifeguards. Throughout the summer we provide activities that express Devereux School’s appreciation of the arts such as music, nature, yoga, gymnastics, and French.

Meet Growing Younger Gracefully

Meet Growing Younger Gracefully

Tell us about your Growing Younger Gracefully and why you started it. I’ve always been a curious person, which has led me down some interesting paths in my life. Growing Younger Gracefully was one of those paths. There are two sides of the business – GYG Organic Serums and Yoga for Living with Loss.

  • GYG Organic Serums started because I wanted to brighten and protect my skin. I was seeking an organic, clean, plant-based, face serum that had no chemicals, no   preservatives, and no corporate oversight. I couldn’t find one so, necessity being the mother of invention, I created my own. I researched essential oils, various other ingredients, experimented on myself, family, and friends, and created what is now my line of organic GYG Organic Face & Body & Eye Serums. Each bottle is handcrafted, blessed, eco-friendly, customized, and produced in Marblehead.
  • Yoga for Living with Loss evolved out of my own losses and my dedicated Yoga practice. I realized that grief is not only in our hearts and minds but also physically impacts our energy centers, the chakras. I started leading Yoga for Living with Loss at Care Dimensions and now offer a Yoga for Living with Loss Video Series, live weekly zoom classes, and private sessions for anyone, which is everyone, who is meeting the challenges of the grieving journey. While grief is universal, one’s own grief is completely personal.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? I have two. The late great Bill Purdin always said, “Every problem is another opportunity to find a creative solution”. The second one is, “Everything is figure-out-able!”

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? I love walking to Fort Sewall and sitting on one of the benches. The spacious sky, the everchanging harbor, and the variable weather encourages me to find deep calm and abundant gratitude.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? My degree is in Early Education and I was a first grade teacher!

Meet Work Loft

Meet Work Loft

Tell us about Work Loft and why you started it. Work Loft was born from my own experience in ‘Work from Home’ (WFH) mode for many years. Working from home can feel isolating and can also be demotivating. It’s hard to show up for work as your ‘best self’ when the dining room table or sofa is your office. Work Loft is the cure – it gets folks into a professional environment that is friendly and social, with all the amenities of a great office…and more! At Work Loft you can focus on your work in an exclusive, casual-professional atmosphere. We have dedicated desks, private offices, and daily reservations. There is a little something for everyone, including a beautiful professional conference room for your business meetings and client visits, which you can rent by the hour.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? The best piece of business advice I’ve ever received is, “Just show up”.

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? Do I have to pick just one? That isn’t an easy question. If I must pick one, I will have to say Work Loft…because the people are cool, and we have great office spaces available!

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? People would be surprised to know my natural hair color.

Meet David Bruett Insurance Services

Meet David Bruett Insurance Services

Tell us about David Bruett Insurance Services and why you started your business. I’m an independent insurance agent that helps individuals, families and businesses find the best option for their personal and business insurance policies. I work with many different companies to find clients the best fit for their specific insurance needs. I started my own insurance agency 5 years ago because, after being in the business for 14 years, I noticed too often agencies weren’t putting the customer first. Agencies weren’t calling people back in a timely manner, they weren’t helping clients when there was an issue with a company and oftentimes were downright rude to customers. I felt I could make the insurance experience better for people with my own agency.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? The best piece of advice I have ever received was, “treat clients the way you would want to be treated”.  It seems so simple but too often companies don’t do it.

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? My favorite spot in Marblehead is being on my boat in the harbor. Whether alone or with friends, good or bad weather, just being on the boat with the salt air smell, music and a beverage can’t be beat.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? Although I’ve lived in Marblehead since I was 4 years old, I was actually born in Hartford, CT which is considered the insurance capital of America. I never had any plans, when I was younger or right after college, to be an insurance agent but I guess being born in Hartford somehow sent me in this direction.
