Meet Houghton Marine Service

Meet Houghton Marine Service

Peg, tell us about Houghton Marine Service and why you and Joe started it. Houghton Marine Service is a mooring service company maintaining moorings for customers in Marblehead, Salem, Nahant, and Swampscott Harbors. We serve boaters with new installation of moorings and yearly maintenance of their moorings. We have a custom built mooring hauler with industry leading equipment that allows us to offer the best service for all types of moorings. Joe and I started our business 45 years ago in Winthrop Harbor, where we both grew up. In 1978 we bought a boat in Winthrop and saw the need for a mooring service in Winthrop Harbor. Given Joe’s love for boating and his background as a Deputy Harbormaster, it seemed natural for Joe to jump in and start a business to serve this need. The business began in 1979 and grew from 30 customers the first year, to over 700 as Joe expanded his service to Boston and South Boston Harbors. We built a reputation of honesty and responsiveness which our customers appreciated. In 2021 we sold off our customer base in Winthrop and moved our business and our equipment up to Marblehead, to the town we have lived in and loved since 1983. We continue to offer the same customer focused service with honesty and integrity wherever we serve our customers.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? Customer service must be your priority when you are in the service industry. Boating can be expensive, but we try to work with the customer to help make it as reasonable as possible. It’s important to build good relationships whether it is with a client or the harbormasters in all the harbors we work in, as well as other mooring companies. We work well with everyone with one goal and that is to make our customers happy within the bylaws of the town.

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? There are so many wonderful places in Marblehead, but given that we love to be on the water, there is no better place than enjoying our 32′ Legacy, the North Star, on our mooring in Marblehead Harbor. The only other best place is on the deck of the Boston Yacht Club at sunset.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? My first meeting with Joe was a bit unconventional. When I was a teenager, a friend and I were heading back to Winthrop Harbor from a sailing regatta in Boston. The Thistle sailboat we were sailing capsized as we passed by the end of the Logan Airport runway because a plane was coming in, throwing its wind as it landed. At the time, Joe was working as a Deputy Harbormaster. He and the Harbormaster saw the boat capsize and came to the rescue. So, my first meeting with Joe was when he hauled me out of the water and into the boat. After that, Joe and I started dating in High School and got married in 1978. Also, we both have careers outside of Houghton Marine. Joe had a 32-year career as a Firefighter/ EMT on the Marine Unit at Mass Port Fire and Peg had a 43-year career in Radiology, retiring as a Radiology Administrator. We now focus our time in building our business in Marblehead and surrounding harbors. Boating is certainly in our blood; it brought us together and keeps us together.

Meet Gingle-Lerman Realty Group

Meet Gingle-Lerman Realty Group

Roberta, tell us about your real estate business partnership. Marcie and I both became Realtors in the early nineties at what was then known as Hunneman Real Estate in Swampscott. We became fast friends and soon realized we had a similar, strong work ethic. We both found it satisfying to match buyers with the right house and help their dreams of owning a home become a reality. With our combined business knowledge and individual skill sets that complimented each other, we realized we made excellent partners as well. So, in 2018, the Gingle-Lerman Realty Group partnership was formed. We pride ourselves on being with our clients every step of the way to the closing and beyond. Our satisfied clients and successful sales along with our consistent awards tell our story. We’re “Your GPS in Real Estate”.

What is the best piece of business advice you ever received? We agree that the best business advice we’ve received was, “Don’t judge anyone by their appearance”.

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead and why?

  • Roberta: Old Burial Hill, I love the view, the stillness, the history and stories written on the stones of the people that once lived in Marblehead.
  • Marcie: Lower Washington Street and Old Town because of the history, the architecture, and the beautiful, sometimes hidden gardens.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

  • Roberta: I write historical romance novels that take place centuries past and usually in Scotland.
  • Marcie: I want to raise miniature pygmy goats when, and if, I retire.

Meet Lopenote

Meet Lopenote

Kristen, tell us about Lopenote and why you and Maggie started it. Lopenote started over a fireside chat where Maggie and I talked about the struggles of remembering our friends and families’ birthdays and the challenge of keeping track of all the addresses. We felt we wanted to help people keep connections strong and what better way than to let people know you’ve remembered them on their birthdays. Lopenote enables you to easily remember important dates within your social and family circles and easily send cards with a personal touch. The key feature of being able to upload a personal photo further supports our idea that in this world of personal disconnect due to our busy and sometimes demanding schedules, Lopenote can help to build those connections again.

Share with us the best pieces of business advice you’ve each received.

  • Kristen: Don’t let your insecurities get in the way when it comes to starting a project or business, just go for it.
  • Maggie: Don’t expect to know exactly what you’re doing from the start. It’s a long journey with many turns and pivots where hard work will lead to success.

Tell me about your favorite Marblehead spots, and why they are your favorite.

  • Kristen: Preston Beach because it always feels like you’re on vacation. I have a close second favorite, which is the sweet little bar at the Harbor Light Inn.
  • Maggie: Marblehead harbor. There is nothing better than a summer sunset looking out over all the boats in the harbor. Also, I love a great morning pick-up at Plus Café…best breakfast sandwiches in town.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about each of you?

  • Kristen: I love getting tattoos.
  • Maggie: When I was born, I was almost 11lbs! My poor mother…

Panakio Insurance Adjusters, Inc.

Panakio Insurance Adjusters, Inc.

Tell us about Panakio Insurance Adjusters, Inc. and why you started it. Panakio Adjusters Inc. has been my family’s business since 1937. Five years ago, I bought the business with my business partner, Joe Caponigro. Panakio isn’t affiliated with any insurance companies. Our role is that of a private adjuster (technically called a Public Adjuster) when a property owner experiences a real estate property loss. We handle losses such as fire, pipe breaks, water damage, etc. The claims process is very complex and overwhelming, our service takes the mystery out of the equation which results in peace of mind and greater settlements for our clients.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? This is a tough question! My Dad always told me that in this business, you can’t fake empathy and the harder you work the luckier you get. We see so many awful claims, you would think that we become immune, but we don’t. Every claim is different, and every family has unique circumstances and needs. Our passion allows us to do our absolute best to take care of every client. Unfortunately, we engage with our clients when something awful has happened. The ability to see the big picture and know what the end result looks like, keeps us going when the battle gets tough.

What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? I love the stretch between Fort Sewall and The Adams house. I walk early most mornings and if you catch the sunrise at the right time, there is nothing more peaceful and beautiful. That is always the best way to start the day!

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? I’ve always been an entrepreneur! I had my own fitness business for 20 years in Marblehead. It seems like a drastic change from fitness to public adjusting but there are many similarities. Most of all, I love to be of service to others!
