Tell us about Mabel of Marblehead. Mabel of Marblehead is a concierge, community, and collaboration company that curates experiences and connections for women. We host events and workshops, design special moments, and share local recommendations that help women learn, grow, and connect — all while highlighting the businesses and people who make Marblehead shine. I started Mabel to answer the question: “what should we do?!” – oftentimes we want to get together with friends and don’t want to go out to eat or sit at a bar. If there was an option in town to do something fun (or even different) that’s beautifully created and well executed, I knew people would come. Similarly, if you’re new to town or in a new stage of life, finding a group of women who are eager to learn and grow and connect with each other can be difficult. I created Mabel to empower women in the North Shore to build a community that really fit them – through beautiful events that inspire them to create beauty in their world as well.
What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? If you have an idea, don’t wait, you need to put it out there and get started. Focus on effort over perfection and you’ll attract people and opportunities based on the vibe you, plus your business are putting into the world.
What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? Sentimentally speaking, it would be Tony’s Pizza because my family has been eating there for as long as I can remember. But today I have a few frequented hot spots: coffee + breakfast: Mookies, shopping: Local Noon + Hunt+Gather, pampering: Organic Nails, exploring: the Rail Trail, dinner: 5 Corners, after dinner drinks: The Hidden Door
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? I spent 20 years living in San Diego. The soul of a North Shore girl with the heart of a California girl.

Tell us about Rule of Thirds Photo Booth and why you started it. After years of planning events, I’ve seen first-hand how quickly the day flies by and how meaningful it is to have something tangible to remember it. Rule of Thirds Photo Booth was born from that idea: a fun, interactive way for guests to make memories and take home a keepsake. While your photographer captures the big moments, the photo booth catches the candid ones, the laughter, the silly poses, and the unexpected joy. It’s more than a photo, it’s an experience your guests get to be part of. Rule of Thirds Photo Booth is perfect for weddings, birthdays, showers, bar and bat mitzvahs, graduation parties, prom and everything in between!
What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? It’s hard to pick a favorite spot in Marblehead, but I’d have to say The Landing. I started working there five years ago, and in that time I’ve met the most amazing people, both coworkers and guests. And really, how can you not be excited to go to work every day with such a beautiful view?
What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned while working at The Landing is just how important community is. That’s a big part of what inspired me to offer my Photo Booth for the recent Pride events at both Shubie’s and The Landing. I can’t wait to be part of more local events like these, and I truly hope Rule of Thirds can become just as involved in community fundraisers and celebrations as The Landing has been. It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me, but I’ve had a passion for photography since elementary school. It all started back in the ’90s when I’d save up my allowance to buy disposable cameras and then eagerly wait for the film to be developed so I could relive those little moments.
What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? My family owned restaurants up and down the East Coast, so working in hospitality came naturally. I started in restaurants as a teenager, and that eventually led to managing at The Landing, where I discovered my love for coordinating private events. Rule of Thirds is really the perfect blend of my two biggest passions: photography and events. It brings people together, captures real moments, and adds a personal touch.

Tell us about Me&Thee Music, why you started it and how it’s evolved over the years. Me&Thee Music began as a community gathering place at a time when many other music clubs and coffeehouses were closing. At the time, I had a folk music radio show and was meeting many local musicians looking for places to play that were not bars or loud restaurants. Because we’ve been a “listening room” since the beginning, we attracted a group of students and adults who volunteered their time to keep it running.
The Me&Thee has become the longest running, all-volunteer acoustic music venue in the US where artists from all over the country perform in an acoustically and historically significant setting at the UU Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead. The Me&Thee has grown over the decades to a professional quality concert series featuring nationally known and regional performers including Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman, John Hartford, Tommy Makem, Anais Mitchell, Pete Seeger, and many more. The Me&Thee is beginning its 55th season this September and we have another great concert schedule lined up.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? Our realization that our volunteers are the most important part of what makes the Me&Thee successful. Our staff is here because they believe in our mission and without them, we wouldn’t succeed. They create the atmosphere and environment for our talent to thrive and for our audience to feel welcome as part of our community. Our volunteers go way beyond what is expected. Every night we open with professional sound, media outreach, audience coordination, ticket sales, performer travel and hospitality, refreshment prep and sales, and more. This is a well-coordinated, yet complicated operation, that has run smoothly for years.
What is your favorite spot in Marblehead, and why? There are so many places in Marblehead where you realize the historic significance and beauty of where we live. Fort Sewall is one of those special places where you can look over our town or out to sea and imagine how many generations began their travels from this spot and how life unfolded in simpler times. Our abundant historical buildings and homes speak that history to us. I’ve traveled all over the world, yet our town remains one of the most beautiful and unique places I know.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? Beginning when I was very young, I pursued tap dancing for 14 years performing in concert halls, orphanages, senior centers and community halls throughout Eastern Massachusetts. I also appeared in two productions at North Shore Music Theater, ‘Gypsy’ and ‘Music Man.’

An interview with Barbara Spiess Miller…
Tell us about the Lobster Lunch at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. The first Lobster Lunch at St. Michael’s was held in 1972. After becoming an exhibit venue for the Festival of Arts the previous year, it seemed a good idea to create a fundraising opportunity around the Festival. It’s been held every year since then with the exception of 1974 and the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. In the early days, lobster rolls were served in the basement of the parish hall. During the 1980’s, members of the parish became more involved with local mission work, as well as entering into a partnership with a parish, St. Thomas, in Arcahaie, Haiti. By 1994, it was decided that all net proceeds of the event would be shared between local charities and the parish of St. Thomas and its school in Haiti. A number of years ago, we moved to serving under the tent on our front lawn, greatly increasing our visibility and thus our revenue. To date we have raised $435,591 for charity and mission work.
What is your favorite part about being a Lobster Lunch chair? How long have you been helping to plan the event? My husband Bill and I have been a part of the Lobster Lunch for at least 35 years. Over that period I have either chaired or co-chaired it a number of times. It’s a ton of work, but we always have a great team. I can’t imagine celebrating the 4th of July any other way. It’s the most festive and fun atmosphere. My favorite part is being able to welcome the community to St. Michael’s and visitors to Marblehead.
What are the dates and times of the Lobster lunch this year? Are there any other activities included that day with St. Michael’s Church? This year the Lobster Lunch will be held Thursday, July 4 through Saturday, July 6 from 11am to 3pm daily. In addition, we’ll once again host the Festival of Arts Sculpture and Mixed Media exhibit in our parish hall. Historic church tours will be offered daily from 10am – 3pm. Our Thrift Shop will be open 10am – 5pm daily. The public can also participate in ringing our bell at noon on July 4th to celebrate Independence Day. Last, but certainly not least, we have Sunday service on July 7 at 9am on the front lawn under the tent – the community is invited.
What makes St. Michael’s location so special? We’re located in the heart of town, where much of Marblehead’s early history happened. It’s a vibrant area where your neighbors are close and yet at times is amazingly serene and peaceful. When the breeze is right, you can smell the salt air wafting in through the open windows. It doesn’t get better than that.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? Something many people don’t know about me is that I’m also the Directress of the Marblehead Female Humane Society (MFHS), having succeeded Lee Bartlett Weed in that role, who was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Church.

We can’t think of summer in Marblehead without thinking about the Festival of Arts. For over 50 years, the festival has been a celebration of all things art related, attracting incredible artists from near and far. Whether you enjoy film, music, writing, painting, photography, there is something for everyone to enjoy!
Marblehead is a community bursting with arts and culture and it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate that on such a grand scale every year. We appreciate all the hard work the volunteers and board members do to create such an amazing event. A lot of time and dedication, all year round, goes into making the Festival of Arts the great success it is!
